Community Health
Community Health has been a major focus of ACTS right from the start of its operation. Preventive rather than curative
approaches have been advocated. Today we have major community health projects outside Allahabad and Bangalore.
Allahabad
In Allahabad, under the leadership of Dr. Shireen David and her husband Pervez David, an active programme reaches
hundreds of mothers and children. With a grant from Australia, the programme has widened.
Some of the new villages in the expansion project are remote and with no power supply and people walk long distances to
get to the main roads for transport. There is no health facility available in some villages and mobile clinics operate to
reach out to these poor people.
The integrated approach gives basic education to children and helps them settle down with some means of
support. A Micro-finance project is conducted to assist where needed.
Bangalore
In Bangalore, the ACTS Health Centre has had many years of community health experience with projects in collaboration
with CIDA – Canadian International Development Agency. Over 50 villages have benefited. A small hospital caters to the needs
of nearby villages and the poor and downtrodden receive timely help through our mobile clinics.
ACTS students receive training in community health and are equipped for service in their own villages. They are taught
basics and challenged to serve the poor wherever they go.
